Beach Volleyball Essentials: Must Have Gear & Towels

Beach Volleyball Essentials: Must Have Gear & Towels

Beach volleyball continues to grow at a high level in Australia, and is helped by the $3.6 million dollar investment over 4 years. This investment, with the primary aim of boosting participation in the sport, is the most significant in 15 years and aims to also enhance access, coaching, officiating and e-learning.

With the rise of participation in the sport, many first time players have either recently signed up or are just about to. It is all too common for first time players to overlook essential gear until they are caught unprepared. Volleyball is not an easy sport to master, but having the correct gear will improve your comfort and your performance.

So if you have recently signed up to beach Volleyball, or you're competing at the Beach volleyball championships in Coolangatta Australia 2025 and need a refresh, here is the list of essentials.

Water Bottle

  • Dehydration will affect your performance through fatigue, loss of focus and muscle cramps. To avoid this, ensure you are hydrated well with your own water bottle
  • Insulated water bottles made with stainless steel ensure your water is kept cold for hours. Avoid plastic single use water bottles as the water will very quickly lose its freshness in the summer heat
  • Utilise water bottles with wide mouth openings - this allows ice cubes to be easily placed in the bottle
  • Hydration breaks are absolutely essential to maintaining peak performance and energy during long games or tournaments - aim for a bottle with 1L

Our Pick - Cheeki 1 Litre Insulated Adventure Bottle

Sunscreen

  • Beach volleyballers can be exposed to the sunlight for hours. Ensure you have sunscreen and you are applying correctly
  • Ensure you are using a reef-safe, high SPF and water resistant sunscreen. In the summer you are exposed to harmful UV rays - therefore high quality sunscreen is essential
  • Remember to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours at the minimum. This assures you are defending against the sun for long games
  • Brands such as SunButter & Little Urchin are known and reputable for being effective, lightweight and non-greasy

Our Pick -  SunButter SPF50 Water Resistant Reef Safe Sunscreen

Sand Free Beach Towel

  • Ensure your towel is sand free. Standard towels retain sand which makes breaks very uncomfortable. Something as simple as drying sweat from your eyes using a standard towel can leave you uncomfortable for the rest of the game
  • Sand can stick to wet skin easily. This increases hassle and unnecessarily brings sand into cars and homes. Avoid beach towels that are not sand free for any beach activity
  • Ensure your towel is quick drying. A standard towel lacks the appropriate materials to ensure quick drying which causes the towel to retain sweat during a volleyball game, making long-term games or tournaments very uncomfortable
  • Ensure your towel is lightweight and compact. Make sure you purchase a quick drying, sand free towel that comes in an easily packaged form. With this, you can ensure your towel after washing can easily be transported to each location
  • Be certain about towel size. Ensure it is a good size (160 x 80cm, 62 x 31 inches) so it can be used for a variety of activities

Tote Bag

  • An increasingly popular bag is the tote bag. A tote bag can be used for a wide array of things and people are increasingly using them for beach sports. Try to find one with a zip to close off the products inside
  • Try to find a tote bag that is water resistant or for best applicability, water proof. Look for a bag that uses PVC or TPU which is more eco friendly (but not fully waterproof)
  • Compartment ability can be beneficial at the end of the day to keep wet items and dry items separate. If this isn't possible, ensure the towel has a case it can come in
  • Your beach volleyball tote bag can ensure all of your items are well transportable. Ensure it is strong and can carry the weight you want to transport

Our Pick: ToteSåk - Waterproof Tote Bag

  • Showing up to training or a game without a ball isn't too uncommon. Avoid this embarrassment with your own ball
  • Find yourself a regulation sized ball so you can warm up and practice any time

Sunglasses

  • Glare from the sun can greatly disrupt your game and reduce visibility. Ensure you have sunglasses that are well equipped to deal with the brightness
  • Polarised lenses can protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays. A good pair of sunglasses are essential for eye safety
  • Lightweight, secure fit designs can benefit your game to avoid disruptions of active movement
  • Good sunglasses prevent squinting, which reduces eye strain during long games

Our Pick - Pacifico Optical - Blair - Burnt Oak with Polarised Grey Lens

Hat or Visor

  • Headgear can help protect you from sunburn and overheating, making sure you are protected for the entire game
  • Bucket hats provide 360° coverage, but can be awkward for visibility/practicality Visors can provide better visibility, but does not provide 360° coverage
  • Using light coloured and breathable fabrics can help with heat reduction

Our Pick - Skyball Performance Bucket Hat

Lightweight Clothing

  • Breathable clothing regulates body temperature and moisture-wicking fabrics such as polyester blends rather than cotton (which retains sweat) can be beneficial
  • Loose fitting and flexible clothing avoids the stress of restrictive clothing and ensures better movement
  • Clothing that is SPF-Rated can provide added sun protection

Our Pick - Game Clothing Round Neck X-back singlet

First Aid Kit

  • Cuts and scrapes are common during beach volleyball. These can be worsened by the sea and sand and cause infections
  • Purchasing your own first aid kit including band-aids, antiseptic wipes and blister pads can alleviate some pressure if something does go wrong
  • Being prepared is increasingly essential for multi day tournaments

Our Pick - Waterproof Beach First Aid Kit - Personal

Bonus Tips for a Successful Beach Volleyball Day

  • Arrive early: Warm up, find a good spot
  • Stretching: Prevent injuries by correctly warming up
  • Snacks: energy boosting snacks such as protein bars and fruit can keep you at peak condition during a long game
  • Stay connected: purchase a waterproof phone case to keep connected with friends and team-mates during long volleyball days
